Syncing product reviews to Google Shopping

Learn how to set up your Google Product Ratings Feed to display ratings and reviews in Google Shopping.

Available on the Awesome plan

Want star ratings on Google Shopping listings? Try the Awesome plan free for 15 days to generate your Product Ratings feed and start the setup — so your reviews can show on Google Shopping once Google approves the feed.

Judge.me is now an approved Google review partner. Once your Product Ratings feed is set up, your reviews sync to Google Shopping automatically — no manual uploads required.

This article focuses on the API feed. The XML feed is still supported for stores that haven't migrated yet — see API feed vs XML feed for the differences and Update your feed to the API version to migrate.

How it works

With the API Product Ratings feed, we send your reviews directly to Google Merchant Center via Google's API — no manual file uploads required.

Before you begin

To submit a Product Ratings feed to Google Shopping, you'll need:

  • Your Products feed already submitted to Google Merchant Center (this is handled separately, not through Judge.me).

  • At least 50 eligible product reviews in your store.

API feed vs XML feed

We provide 3 versions of the Product Ratings feed for Google Shopping. Each version differs in how reviews are sent to Google and how much setup is required.

  • API Product Ratings feed (recommended)

This is the latest and most automated option. Instead of generating a file, Judge.me sends reviews directly to Google Merchant Center via Google's API. Reviews are uploaded automatically as they are collected, with regular background syncs.

  • New XML Product Ratings feed (legacy)
This version generates an XML file containing your reviews, which you submit to Google Merchant Center. It was introduced to meet Google Shopping requirements when Judge.me became a pre-approved Google partner.

  • Old XML Product Ratings feed (deprecated)
This is the original version and is no longer recommended. Like the new XML Product Ratings feed, it generates an XML file that you submit to Google. However, it uses minimal filtering and may not meet current Google requirements. It is kept for backward compatibility but may be phased out in the future.

Your feed version

The quickest way to tell which feed you're on is to open Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping in your Judge.me admin and check what's shown at the top of the page:

  • If you see any banner, you're on the API feed.

  • If you see a blue We have noticed you may already have a product review source connected banner:

    • We have automatically updated you to the API feed.

    • You can safely ignore this banner, especially if you don't have any product review sources in Google Merchant Center or if you don't have the Product review sources tab in Google Merchant Center.

  • If you see a yellow Upgrade your Google Shopping feed banner, you're on the XML feed.

You can also confirm your feed version based on your install date instead:

  • If you installed Judge.me on or after April 7, 2025, you're on the API Product Ratings feed.

  • If you installed Judge.me before April 7, 2025 but didn't have the XML feed enabled at that time:

    • We have automatically updated you to the API Product Ratings feed.

    • You'll see a blue We have noticed you may already have a product review source connected banner in app. You can safely ignore this banner , especially if you don't have any product review sources in Google Merchant Center or if you don't have the Product review sources tab in Google Merchant Center.

  • If you installed Judge.me before April 7, 2025 and had the XML feed enabled at that time, you're on the XML Product Ratings feed. You can choose to update to the API version at any time.

What we send to Google

Once you submit the API Product Ratings feed from your Judge.me admin, we handle everything from there — you don't need to create a separate review feed, connect your own API credentials, or provide a Merchant Center ID:

  • New reviews are pushed to Google as soon as they're collected.

  • Periodic background syncs keep existing reviews up to date.

  • Reviews are sent to a centralized Google Merchant Center account that Judge.me manages on behalf of all users.

See Included reviews and Excluded reviews for which reviews qualify to be sent.

Note:

Because reviews go to the centralized Judge.me account, you won't see them inside your own Google Merchant Center — only on your live Google Shopping listings.

Included reviews

All product reviews with written content from one of the following sources (this includes published, pending, archived, and hidden reviews and both verified and unverified reviews) are included in the API Product Ratings feed:

To see the reviews that are included in the API Product Ratings feed:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Reviews.

  2. Click the Search and filter icon (🔍︎ᯤ) on the right.

  3. Click Add filter + on the left and select Source.

  4. Click the checkbox next to Google Shopping.

Excluded reviews

To ensure compliance for the Google Product Ratings program requirements, all product reviews from the following sources, even if they are verified, are not included in the API Product Ratings feed:

  1. Reviews collected via:

  2. Reviews synced from:

  3. Reviews submitted via webhook

  4. Reviews imported from Loox, Yotpo, Stamped, but not verified via metaobjects

  5. Reviews imported from any other sources, including but not limited to:

  6. Reviews without written content (rating-only reviews)

How Google matches reviews to products

For each review we send, we include key product information so Google can link it to the correct product in your Products feed:

  • Product identifiers (Shopify product ID; optionally SKU, GTIN, and MPN)

  • Product URL

  • Brand information

  • Your store's domain

The more identifiers you provide, the more accurate the matching. See Add unique product identifiers to set these up.

When reviews appear on Google Shopping

After you submit the feed, Google takes around 10 days to process it.

Once processed, any review that's correctly matched to a product and meets Google's Product Ratings policies starts showing on Google Shopping — in both paid ads and free listings.

Considerations

  • Display on Google Shopping:

    • Even if reviews are correctly matched to products, Google will only display the star ratings and reviews when they determine that the information is accurate and relevant to customers.

  • Google Store Ratings (or Seller Ratings):

    • According to Google's policies, store ratings can be collected from:

      • Google Customer Reviews

      • Supported review partners

      • Evaluation by Google and/or other evaluation partners

    • Although we are now an authorized Google review partner, we do not support adding Store Ratings (also known as Seller Ratings or Business Reviews) to Google Shopping at this time. We will keep you informed of any developments.

Update your feed to the API version

This section is for stores currently on the XML feed.

  • If you're on the XML feed, follow the steps below to switch to the API version.

  • If you're setting up the integration for the first time, see Submit your Product Ratings feed instead.

Why you should update

Updating from the XML feed to the API version is not mandatory at this time, but will be required in the future — we recommend updating as soon as possible.

  • The API feed is the standard going forward. Google will require all stores to use the API feed eventually, and the XML feed will be discontinued at that point. Updating now means you're already set when that happens.

  • Reviews sync automatically. No XML files to regenerate, no manual uploads to Google Merchant Center. New reviews are pushed to Google as they're collected.

  • The XML feed is no longer maintained. It will continue to work for now, but won't receive bug fixes, improvements, or new features.

  • Additional configuration options are only available on the API feed, including the profanity filter, reviewer name format, and other settings under Step 2: Setup reviews feed.

Things to know before updating

Updating is straightforward, but there are a few things to be aware of before you do:

  • Your review count on Google Shopping may change. Once you update, only reviews that meet Google's requirements will be included. The number of reviews shown on Google Shopping may go up or down compared to the XML feed.

  • Imported reviews aren't included. If you're updating from the old XML Product Ratings feed (as opposed to the new XML feed), imported reviews won't carry over to the API feed. If your old XML feed contained imported reviews, you may see a drop in the number of reviews shown on Google Shopping. See API feed vs XML feed for the difference between old and new XML feeds.

  • Updating is the standard path forward. There's no UI option to switch back to the XML feed once you've updated, since the XML feed is being phased out. Make sure you've reviewed the points above before proceeding.

Step 1: Switch to the API feed

Available on the Awesome plan

If you installed Judge.me before April 7, 2025 and currently have the XML feed enabled, to update your Product Ratings feed to the API version:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

  2. Click the check box next to "I understand that I must delete my previous Google Shopping review after 10 days to avoid duplicate reviews and potential blocking of your feed".

  3. Click Upgrade.

  4. You'll see a confirmation modal. Click Upgrade there to confirm.

Once you've updated your Product Ratings feed to the API version, we will submit it to Google Shopping automatically for you.

Step 2: Delete the XML Product Ratings feed

After you've updated to the API Product Ratings feed:

  • Wait up to 10 days for Google to process your new API Product Ratings feed.

  • During this time, you might see duplicated reviews in Google Shopping as both the API and XML feeds are active.

  • In your Google Merchant Center:

    • You will only see reviews from the XML feed.

    • You will not see the reviews from the API feed as they will only show in the centralized Judge.me Google Merchant Center.

  • Once you start seeing new reviews showing in your Google Shopping ads or free listings, you can then delete the XML feed. To delete the XML feed from your Google Shopping:

    1. From your Google Merchant Center Next admin, on the left panel, go to Settings > Data sources.

    2. Go to the Product review sources tab.

    3. Find the XML feed from Judge.me that you submitted. It might be named "Product Reviews".

    4. Click the 3-dot icon on the right of that feed.

    5. Click Delete source.

Submit the API Product Ratings feed

This section is for first-time setups.

  • If you're setting up the integration for the first time, follow the steps below.

  • If you migrated from the XML feed, you've already submitted your feed — see Update your feed to the API version instead.

Step 1: Confirm that the Products feed is submitted

Available on the Awesome plan for stores with at least 50 eligible reviews

To display your Judge.me product reviews on Google Shopping, you'll first need to complete your Google Merchant Center setup. This is not handled by Judge.me and must be done separately.

To get started with Merchant Center:

  1. Upload a product feed to your Merchant Center:

Once your product feed is approved in Google Merchant Center, to confirm that in Judge.me:

  1. In Step 1: Submit your product feed section, click the checkbox next to I confirm I've submitted my product feed.

  2. Click Confirm.

Step 2: Submit the Product Ratings feed

Available on the Awesome plan for stores with at least 50 eligible reviews

Before submitting the Product Ratings feed, check the Add unique product identifiers and Configure your Product Ratings feed sections below — there are a number of settings you can adjust, including store link format, product identifiers, reviewer name format, and which reviews can be excluded. You can also come back and change these after submitting.

To submit the API Product Ratings feed to Google Shopping:

  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

  2. Click Submit feed.

  3. A confirmation pop-up will appear, click Submit feed to confirm.

Confirm that reviews are syncing

Allow time for Google to process the feed.

  • Google takes around 10 days to process your Product Ratings feed after you submit it. Ratings might not appear on Shopping listings before then, even if everything is set up correctly.

Reviews submitted via the API feed go to a centralized Google Merchant Center managed, so you can't check individual review statuses from your own Merchant Center.

Instead, the most reliable way to confirm the integration is working is to pick a recent review, find its product, and check whether the rating shows on that product's Google Shopping listing.

  • Step 1: Find a recent review. Pick a review that was submitted after you enabled the API feed — that way, you know it had to come through the API feed to reach Google.

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Reviews.

    2. Click the Search and filter icon (🔍︎ᯤ) on the right.

    3. Click Add filter + on the left and select Source.

    4. Click the checkbox next to Google Shopping.

    5. From the filtered list, pick a review with a date after you enabled the API feed, but at least a couple of days ago.

    6. Make a note of the product the review is attached to — you'll need it in the next step.

  • Step 2: Find the product on Google Shopping.

    1. Go to shopping.google.com, or use the Shopping tab on a regular Google search.

    2. Search for the product you noted in Step 1.

      • Including your store name in the search (for example, product name + store name) makes it easier to find your specific listing, especially if the product name is generic.

      • Google Shopping listings are region-specific. Make sure you search from the country where your store sells or use a VPN. If you're checking from a different country than your customers, you may not see your listings at all.

    3. Look for your store in the results.

  • Step 3: Check that the review is showing

    1. Once you've found your listing, click into the listing to see the individual reviews.

    2. Look for the specific review you noted in Step 1 to confirm it has come through from Judge.me

Add unique product identifiers

Available on the Awesome plan for stores with at least 50 eligible reviews

Google states that ratings and reviews are matched to products based on a number of factors, the most important being globally unique product identifiers that appear in both:

  • the Products feed, and

  • the Product Ratings feed

If the unique product identifiers are missing in either your Products feed or Product Ratings feed, the review might not be matched to the correct product, resulting in it being marked as Missing or invalid product_id (or STRONG_IDS_NOT_PRESENT) in Google Merchant Center.

We automatically include the following product identifiers for each product in the API Product Ratings feed to support this matching process:

  • Product URL (<product_url>)

  • Product name (<product_name>)

  • Shopify product ID (<skus>) — this is Shopify's numeric product ID, not the SKU you define on your products. It's included in a fixed format: shopify_{country}_{shopify_product_id}

You can enhance the matching by also adding the following product identifiers in the Product Ratings feed:

  • Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) (<gtins>)

  • Manufacturer Part Numbers (MPNs) (<mpns>) and Brand name (<brands>)

1. GTIN

The <gtins> attribute in the Product Ratings feed includes a list of Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), such as UPC or EAN codes. GTINs help Google match the reviews in your Product Ratings feed with the correct products in your Products feed.

To use GTIN, you'll first need to register your GTINs with GS1.

Once registered, to ensure proper product matching, the same GTIN values must exist in both feeds.

To add GTINs to the Products feed, you can add a barcode value to your products in Shopify:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products.

  2. Open the product you want.

  3. Scroll down to the Inventory section.

  4. In the Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.) field, enter the registered GTIN for your product.

  5. Click Save.

Then, you can include them in the Product Ratings feed, using the GTIN values already saved on your products:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Store settings section.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Add GTIN in the feed.

    4. Click Save.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Advanced settings section at the bottom.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Add GTIN in the feed (Default).

    4. Click Save.

2. MPN

The <mpn> attribute includes a list of Manufacturer Part Numbers (MPNs) associated with the product. MPNs help Google match reviews in the Product Ratings feed with the correct products in your Products feed.

To ensure proper product matching, the same MPN values must exist in both feeds.

To add MPNs to the Products feed, you can add SKUs to your products in Shopify:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products.

  2. Open the product you want.

  3. Scroll down to the Inventory section.

  4. In the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) field, enter your MPN for the product.

  5. Click Save.

Then, you can include them in the Product Ratings feed, using the SKUs values already saved on your products:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Store settings section.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Add MPN in the feed.

    4. Click Save.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Advanced settings section at the bottom.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Add MPN in the feed.

    4. Click Save.

3. Brand name

The <brands> attribute contains the product's brand name. Brand information helps Google match reviews in the Product Ratings feed with the correct products in your Products feed.

To ensure proper product matching, the same brand values should exist in both feeds.

You can add brand names to your Products feed by adding Vendor to your products in Shopify:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products.

  2. Open the product you want.

  3. On the right menu, scroll down to the Product organization section.

  4. In the Vendor field, enter the brand name for the product.

  5. Click Save.

When brand values are available on your products, we automatically include them in the Product Ratings feed. No additional setup is required.

Configure your Product Ratings feed

Available on the Awesome plan for stores with at least 50 eligible reviews

You can configure these settings before or after submitting your feed — any changes will apply to the next sync.

1. Link format

To control whether the product and review URLs in the feed use HTTP or HTTPS:

    4. Click Save.

2. Name format

The <reviewer> / <name> attribute provides the reviewer's name in the Product Ratings feed.

To change how the name appears in the feed:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Review settings section.

    3. Open the Reviewer name format dropdown.

    4. Select one of the following options:

      • Shorten last name (John S.) – displays the reviewer's first name followed by the initial of their last name

        <reviewer>
        <name>John S.</name>
        </reviewer>

      • First name only (John) – displays only the reviewer's first name

        <reviewer>
        <name>John</name>
        </reviewer>

      • Initials (J.S.) – displays only the initials of the reviewer's first and last name

        <reviewer>
        <name>J. S.</name>
        </reviewer>

      • Anonymous – displays the reviewer name as "Anonymous".

        <reviewer>
        <name>Anonymous</name>
        </reviewer>

    5. Click Save.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Review content section.

    3. Open the Reviewer name format dropdown.

    4. Select one of the following options:

      • using initials after the first name, e.g. – displays the reviewer's first name followed by the initial of their last name (for example, "John D.").

        <reviewer>
        <name>John D.</name>
        </reviewer>

      • using initials for the entire reviewer name, e.g. – displays only the initials of the reviewer's first and last name (for example, "J.D.").

        <reviewer>
        <name>J. D.</name>
        </reviewer>

      • as Anonymous – displays the reviewer name as "Anonymous".

        <reviewer>
        <name>Anonymous</name>
        </reviewer>

    5. Click Save.

3. Review images

The <reviewer_images> attribute contains the URLs of the images attached to the review.

To control whether to include this attribute in your Product Ratings feed:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Review settings section.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Include review photos.

    4. Click Save.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Review content section.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Include review photos.

    4. Click Save.

4. Product groups

The <products> attribute contains all products associated with a review.

  • When a review applies to a single product, the <products> attribute includes one <product> node.

  • Reviews are associated at the product level, not the variant level. If a product has multiple variants, all variant reviews are grouped under the same <product> node, rather than being split by variant.

  • When a review applies to multiple products (for example, through product groups), the <products> container can include multiple <product> nodes—one for each product.

Including reviews from product groups can significantly increase the size of your Product Ratings feed, especially if your product groups contain many products. Two limits apply per review:

  • A maximum of 150 products per group.

  • A maximum of 1500 product attributes per review.

Each product in a group contributes 8 attributes to the review: product_url, title, and the product_ids set (shopify_product_id, barcodes, SKUs, MPNs, Vendor). The attribute limit is checked first, so it can be reached before the product limit — for example, if your products have many identifiers. When either limit is hit, the remaining products in the group won't be associated with that review.

If you have very large product groups or products with many identifiers, consider disabling Include reviews part of product groups so each review is associated only with the original product.

To control whether reviews from product groups are associated with only the original product or all products in the group within the Product Ratings feed:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Review settings section.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Include product groups reviews.

    4. Click Save.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Review content section.

    3. Select one of the following options:

      • Include reviews part of product groups – The feed may contain multiple <product> nodes for a single review.

      • Don't include product groups reviews – The feed only contains one <product> node for each review.

    4. Click Save.

5. Reviews from out-of-store products

When Google reviews your Product Ratings feed, they may check the review URLs and product URLs included in the feed.

If a review is linked to a product that has been removed from your store, these links may no longer work. Including reviews for out-of-store products can lead to questions or issues during Google's review of your feed.

To avoid this, you can exclude reviews for out-of-store products from the Product Ratings feed:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Review settings section.

    3. Unclick the checkbox next to Include reviews for out-of-store products.

    4. Click Save.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Advanced settings section at the bottom.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Exclude reviews for out-of-store products.

    4. Click Save.

6. Reviews containing personal information

To control whether reviews that contain personal information are included in the Product Ratings feed:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Review settings section.

    3. For Include reviews containing personal information. We will replace personal information with asterisks:

      • Click the checkbox next to it to include reviews containing common types of personally identifiable information (PII)—including email addresses, phone numbers (including US toll-free numbers), credit card numbers, and person names, in the feed. The detected PII will be replaced with ****.

      • Unclick the checkbox to exclude them from the feed.

    4. Click Save.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Review content section.

    3. For Include reviews containing personal information:

      • Click the checkbox next to it to include reviews containing common types of personally identifiable information (PII)—including email addresses, phone numbers (including US toll-free numbers), credit card numbers, and person names, in the feed. The detected PII will be replaced with ****.

      • Unclick the checkbox to exclude them from the feed.

    4. Click Save.

7. Spam (marked by the publisher)

The <is_spam> attribute indicates whether a review is considered spam in the Product Ratings feed.

If <is_spam>true</is_spam>, the review will appear in the Product Ratings feed as Spam (marked by the publisher) or PUBLISHER_MARKED_AS_SPAM and will not be shown on Google Shopping.

You can't manually mark a review as spam in the Product Ratings feed. The <is_spam> value is set automatically depends on the version of the Product Ratings feed you're using:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    • Profanity detection runs automatically with the API feed.

    • If profanity is detected:

      • The review is still included in the Product Ratings feed, but is marked as <is_spam>true</is_spam>.

      • The review might appear normal in the Judge.me Reviews dashboard.

    • You can optionally choose to censor the detected profane words with **** in the review's title or content in the feed. To do so:

      1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

      2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Review settings section.

      3. Click the checkbox next to Apply profanity filter to reviews. We will replace profanity with asterisks.

      4. Click Save.

    • This setting only censors the detected profane words — The review remains marked as <is_spam>true</is_spam>, and won't show on Google Shopping.

  • If you're using the new XML feed:

    • Profanity detection runs automatically with the new XML feed.

    • If profanity is detected:

      • The affected words in the review's title or content are automatically replaced with **** in the feed.

      • The review is still included in the Product Ratings feed, but is marked as <is_spam>true</is_spam>.

      • The review might appear normal in the Judge.me Reviews dashboard.

    • At this time, this behavior cannot be changed or edited.

  • If you're using the old XML feed:

    • In the old XML feed, a review is marked as spam if it is not published in Judge.me.

    • That means, all hidden, archived, and pending reviews are marked as <is_spam>true</is_spam>.

8. Reviews containing specific keywords

To exclude reviews that contain specific words ("shipped", "arrived", "support", "shipping", "company", "email", "shipment", "store", "package", "service", "business", "deliver", "order") from the Product Ratings feed:

  • If you're using the API feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Step 2: Setup reviews feed > Review settings section.

    3. Unclick the checkbox next to Include reviews containing specific keywords regarding store experience.

    4. Click Save.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Google and SEO > Google Shopping.

    2. Scroll down to the Review content section.

    3. Click the checkbox next to Exclude store reviews containing specific keywords.

    4. Click Save.

Note that these keywords are matched as substrings, not whole words — so "deliver" will also match "delivered", "delivery", and "redelivery", and "order" will also match "ordered", "reorder", and "preordered". This can cause false positives, like a review saying "the product arrived quickly and in perfect condition" being excluded even though it's a genuine product review.

9. Collection method

The <collection_method> attribute indicates how the review was collected. The value is either one of the following:

  • post_fulfillment – for example, via a review request email

  • unsolicited – for example, submitted directly on the product page

This attribute cannot be edited or removed, helping ensure transparency and compliance with Google's requirements.

10. Incentivized reviews

The <is_incentivized_review> attribute indicates whether the customer received a reward such as a discount, gift card, points, or any other benefit when submitting their review.

  • <is_incentivized_review>false</is_incentivized_review>
The reviewer did not receive any incentive for leaving the review.

  • <is_incentivized_review>true</is_incentivized_review>
The reviewer did receive an incentive for submitting the review.

When a review is incentivized, we automatically tag it with the is_incentivized_review attribute in the Product Ratings feed. This is regardless of whether the incentive is disclosed or mentioned beforehand (for example, in the review request).

This attribute cannot be edited or removed, helping ensure transparency and compliance with Google's requirements.

11. Verified reviews

The <is_verified_purchase> attribute indicates whether the review is linked to a verified order from your store.

This attribute cannot be edited or removed, helping ensure transparency and compliance with Google's requirements.

Review issues in Google Merchant Center

For reviews included in the Product Ratings feed, Google processes each review and assigns it one of the following statuses:

  • Ready to serve — the review meets Google's requirements and is eligible to display on Google Shopping.

  • Needs review — Google has flagged a potential issue with the review. It may still display on Google Shopping while under review.

  • Disapproved — the review does not meet Google's requirements and will not display on Google Shopping.

How you can check review statuses depends on which feed version you're using.

  • If you're using the API feed:

    • Reviews submitted via the API feed go to a centralized Google Merchant Center account managed by Judge.me, not your own.

    • There is currently no way to view individual review statuses or issues from your own Google Merchant Center.

    • To verify reviews are syncing, check your live Google Shopping listings (in both paid ads and free listings). Once Google has processed your feed and matched reviews to products, star ratings will appear directly on your product listings.

    • If ratings don't appear after Google's processing window (around 10 days), the most likely cause is Missing or invalid product_id — see Add unique product identifiers.

  • If you're using the XML feed:

    • Reviews from the XML feed are submitted to your own Google Merchant Center, so you can check their statuses there directly.

      1. From your Google Merchant Center Next admin, on the left menu, go to Reviews.

      2. There, you'll see a list of reviews from the Product Ratings feed and their processing statuses.

      3. You can open the reviews in that list to see their Review detail and Review issues.

Reviews with the Needs review or Disapproved status are tagged with one or more issue types that explain why they were flagged. The issues below describe what each type means and, where applicable, what you can do about them.

1. Missing or invalid product_id

This is the most common reason why reviews don't appear on Google Shopping.

A review is flagged with Missing or invalid product_id (or STRONG_IDS_NOT_PRESENT) and falls under the Needs review status in Google Merchant Center when it can't be matched to a product because the unique product identifiers are missing or don't match between the Products feed and the Product Ratings feed.

See Add unique product identifiers for how to fix this.

2. Spam (marked by the publisher)

A review is flagged with Spam (marked by the publisher) (or PUBLISHER_MARKED_AS_SPAM) and falls under the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when it was marked as spam in the Product Ratings feed before being sent to Google.

See Spam (marked by the publisher) for how this is determined and how to control it.

3. Unsupported comment format

A review is flagged with Unsupported comment format (or COMMENT_WITH_URL) and falls under the Needs review status in Google Merchant Center when Google detects something in the review content that looks like a URL.

This sometimes triggers on text that isn't actually a link. The most common cause is a missing space after a period — like "product.it" or "great. Will buy again" — where Google can read it as a web address.

Unfortunately, as this flag is determined by Google's content checks, it can't be adjusted in Judge.me. However, you can:

4. Inauthentic content

A review is flagged with Inauthentic content (or REVIEW_AUTHENTICITY) and given the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when Google's systems have flagged the review as potentially not genuine.

Unfortunately, this is determined by Google according to their Product Ratings policies, so it isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side.

5. Unsafe imagery

A review is flagged with Unsafe imagery (or REVIEW_FAMILY_SAFE_IMAGES) and given the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when Google's automated checks have classified one or more images attached to the review as not safe for all audiences.

Unfortunately, this flag is determined by Google, so it isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side. However, you can:

6. Personally identifiable information

A review is flagged with Personally identifiable information (or POLICY_VIOLATION) and falls under the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when its content violates one of Google's Product Ratings policies — most commonly because it contains personal or confidential information about someone.

To reduce the chance of this flag being applied, we automatically detect and replace personal information (such as email addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, and names) in reviews with **** before they're sent to Google, or you can also exclude them from the Product Ratings feed — see Reviews containing personal information.

This only filters at the feed level. Once a review is included in the feed, Google runs its own checks, and any flag they apply at that stage is determined by Google and isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side. However, you can:

7. Low quality content

A review is flagged with Low quality content (or LOW_QUALITY) and falls under the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when its content contains too many misspelled words, grammatically incorrect statements, or repeated phrases to provide sufficient value. For example, "AAAAAA+++++" is non-substantive and offers no useful information about the product.

This flag is determined by Google, so it isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side. However, you can:

8. Missing content

A review is flagged with Missing content (or CONTENT_EMPTY) and falls under the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when it has no readable text content in the review body. This typically happens when a review has only a title with no body text — the title is sent as part of the review but isn't counted as the review content itself.

This flag is determined by Google, so it isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side. However, you can:

9. Unnecessary tags

A review is flagged with Unnecessary tags (or HTML_CRUFT) and falls under the Needs review status in Google Merchant Center when its content contains characters that look like HTML tags — for example, <, >, or fragments resembling markup.

Google automatically removes these tags from the review text before displaying it on Google Shopping, so the review can still display, but the cleaned version may differ slightly from what the reviewer originally wrote.

This flag is determined by Google, so it isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side. However, you can:

10. Hate speech

A review is flagged with Hate speech (or REVIEW_HATE) and falls under the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when Google's automated checks have classified the content as text that may promote or condone violence against individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity or other core characteristics, or as using profanity targeted at such individuals or groups.

This flag is determined by Google, so it isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side. However, you can:

11. Unsupported comment characters

A review is flagged with Unsupported comment characters (or COMMENT_WITH_REPLACEMENT_CHAR) and falls under the Needs review status in Google Merchant Center when its content contains the Unicode replacement character (, U+FFFD). This character usually appears when text wasn't encoded or copied correctly, and the original character couldn't be preserved. It often happens with certain emojis or special symbols that didn't transfer cleanly into the review — for example, "Really great stuff 👌👌" where what should have been an emoji has been replaced with a .

This flag is determined by Google, so it isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side. However, you can:

12. Inappropriate content

A review is flagged with Inappropriate content (or REVIEW_INAPPROPRIATE_CONTENT) and falls under the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when Google has classified it as containing words or phrases considered very rude or disrespectful, or words considered profane or sexually explicit. Google may apply this flag through automated checks or, in some cases, manual checks.

To reduce the chance of this flag being applied, we apply a profanity filter that replaces matched words in the review's title and content with **** before they're sent to Google — see Spam (marked by the publisher).

This only filters at the feed level. Once a review is included in the feed, Google runs their own checks, and any flag they apply at that stage is determined by Google and isn't something we can adjust on the Judge.me side. However, you can:

13. Harmful links

A review is flagged with Harmful links (or REVIEW_DANGEROUS_LINKS) and falls under the Disapproved status in Google Merchant Center when Google detects a link in the review content that has been classified as potentially unsafe — for example, a link Google associates with malware, phishing, or other harmful content.

Like Unsupported comment format (or COMMENT_WITH_URL), this can also trigger on text that isn't actually a link. The most common cause is a missing space after a period.

Unfortunately, as this flag is determined by Google's content checks, it can't be adjusted in Judge.me. However, you can:

Disable the API Product Ratings feed

Disabling the API feed doesn't switch you back to the XML feed.

  • The XML feed is being phased out and isn't available as a fallback.

  • Disabling the API feed simply stops Judge.me from sending reviews to Google — it doesn't roll you back to an older feed version.

If you no longer want to sync reviews to Google Shopping, you can disable the API Product Ratings feed at any time.

To disable the API Product Ratings feed:

  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

  2. Click Disable feed.

Once the API feed is disabled:

  • New and updated reviews stop syncing to Google. Any reviews collected after this point won't be sent to Judge.me centralized Google Merchant Center.

  • Reviews already sent to Google stay there. Disabling only stops new uploads — it doesn't remove reviews that have already been sent. Star ratings already showing on your Google Shopping listings aren't pulled down by Judge.me as a result of disabling.
