The automatic spam filter helps you protect your store from low-quality or malicious content by automatically flagging suspicious reviews and questions. This allows you to collect web reviews freely—without worrying about bots, spam, or competitor attacks.
In this article, we’ll show you how to enable the automatic spam filter and manage spam reviews and questions flagged by our system.
How it works
Here's how the automatic spam filter works:
A customer submits a web review or question. Someone submits a review through the Write a review button, or a question through the Ask a question button, on your product pages — or via an API request.
We check the submission automatically. Our system checks whether it looks like spam.
Flagged submissions go to the Spam tab. A flagged submission isn't created as a review or question at all — it's diverted to a separate Spam tab, so it never appears on your store.
You can review what was flagged. Open the Spam tab to see flagged items, and use Not Spam to move anything wrongly flagged back. From that point it's treated as a normal review or question.
The automatic spam filter only checks new web review submissions made after you turn it on. It does not check:
Web reviews that already existed before you enabled it — turning the filter on doesn't retroactively move existing reviews to spam.
Imported and synced reviews
Reviews collected via review request emails, QR codes, and Judge.me review links
How it works with other features
1. Google Shopping
Reviews flagged as spam by the automatic spam filter are not included in the Google Shopping Product Ratings feed — regardless of the source. This is separate from the feed's own Spam (marked by the publisher) status.
Considerations
The spam filter is automatic — there's no way to manually mark a review or question as spam. When you hide a review, you can choose Spam as the reason, but that's only a label for your own reference: it hides the review like any other reason and doesn't move it to the Spam tab.
