Sending review requests based on Shopify marketing consent

Learn how to control whether review request emails are sent to all customers or only those who accept marketing in Shopify.

Updated this week

Available on the Free plan.

Judge.me lets you control whether review request emails are sent to all customers or only to those who accept marketing in Shopify.

By default, review requests are sent to all customers, helping you maximize review collection. However, In some regions, review request emails may be considered marketing emails. If you're subject to regulations like GDPR, you may need to only send emails to customers who have opted in.

Considerations

How it works

This is how this feature works:

  1. By default, review requests are sent to all customers

    • When the setting is enabled (checkbox checked), review requests are sent to all customers, regardless of their marketing preference.

    • When the setting is disabled (checkbox unchecked), review requests are sent only to customers who accept marketing. Customers who opted out will not receive emails.

  2. Judge.me reads marketing consent directly from Shopify, based on customer preferences set at checkout or in their account

  3. If a customer has opted out and the setting is disabled, the email is not sent and the request is marked as: “Skipped, email does not accept marketing”

  4. If a customer updates their marketing preference in Shopify, Judge.me automatically re-evaluates pending review requests to reflect the change

Sending review requests only to subscribed customers

Review request emails can be treated as transactional (sent to all customers, which is the default behaviour) or marketing (sent only to customers who accept marketing).

This setting lets you choose which customers should receive your review requests based on their Shopify marketing preferences.

To configure this:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Review Requests > Request Scheduling.

  2. Scroll down to the Advanced section.

  3. Uncheck “Send review requests to customers who have opted out of Shopify marketing emails”

    • Checked: Send review requests to all customers.

    • Unchecked: Only send to customers who accept marketing emails.

  4. Click Save.

Note: Adding incentives (such as discount offers for leaving a review) to your review request emails may make them more likely to be considered marketing emails in some regions. Check your local regulations before sending these emails to customers who have not opted in.
