Keeping your store respectful is key to building customer trust. With Judge.me’s profanity filter, you can detect and manage offensive language in product reviews.

In this article, we’ll show you how the profanity filter works, how to enable censorship or hiding, and how to add your own blocked words.

How the profanity filter works

The profanity filter scans all submitted reviews and takes action based on your settings. You can:

  • Censor blacklisted words by replacing them with asterisks (e.g. *****).

  • Hide reviews that contain inappropriate or offensive content.

  • Add your own filtered words and phrases in addition to our default blacklist.

Censor reviews containing profanity automatically

You can configure Judge.me to automatically replace banned words in reviews with asterisks [*****]. This allows the review to be published while hiding the offensive terms from your customers.

To censor reviews with profanity:

  1. Go to Manage Reviews > Moderation.

  2. Scroll to the Review restriction section.

  3. In the Profanity filter area, select Replace banned words with asterisks (***) and publish review.

  4. Click Save.

Note: If you use automatic social sharing, the censored reviews will also be shared on social media.

For other e-commerce platforms

If you're using a different platform, follow these steps to enable censorship:

  1. Go to Settings > Review Widget > Review Moderation > Profanity filter.

  2. Select Replace blacklisted words with *'s.

  3. Click Save settings.

Hide reviews containing profanity automatically

Instead of censoring specific words, you can choose to automatically hide entire reviews that contain banned language.

To automatically hide reviews with profanity:

  1. Go to Manage Reviews > Moderation.

  2. Scroll to the Profanity filter section.

  3. Select Hide review containing banned words.

  4. Click Save.

For other e-commerce platforms

To enable automatic hiding on other platforms:

  1. Go to Settings > Review Widget > Review Moderation > Profanity filter.

  2. Select Hide reviews containing blacklisted words.

  3. Click Save settings.

Add custom blocked words and phrases

Judge.me includes a standard list of blocklisted words, and you can also add your own custom terms. This gives you full control to fine-tune review moderation based on your brand voice and customer expectations.

Add custom words manually

To enter custom words or phrases manually:

  1. Go to Manage Reviews > Moderation.

  2. Scroll to the Profanity filter section.

  3. Under Blocklist words or phrases, enter each word or phrase on a new line.

  4. Click Save.

Import custom words via CSV

If you have a larger list, you can upload it using a CSV file:

  1. Export the list of banned words from the Profanity filter section.

  2. Open it in Google Sheets or Excel and add your custom words.

  3. Re-upload the file to the same section.

For other e-commerce platforms

To add custom words or phrases to your blacklist:

  1. Go to Settings > Review Widget > Review Moderation > Profanity filter.

  2. Click Add custom filtered words/phrases.

  3. Enter each word or phrase on a new line.

  4. Click Save.

View and manage reviews containing profanity

To manage the censored or hidden reviews containing profanity:
