EU law requires that text to carry a hidden label saying a machine wrote it. Judge.me adds this label for you automatically, everywhere that text goes.
How it looks
Your store and emails look exactly the same:
Nothing changes on your storefront.
Nothing changes in your emails.
There's no new setting, badge, or notice in your Judge.me admin.
The label lives in parts of a page and an email that browsers and mail apps don't display. You can only see it by looking at the underlying code:
On a storefront page: right-click the page, choose View page source, and search for
digitalSourceType.In an email: open the raw version of the message. In Gmail, that's Show original.
How it works
The label says one of three things, and nothing else:
Created using Generative AI: AI wrote every part of the text.
Edited using Generative AI: you wrote it, and AI rewrote it for you.
A mix: part of it is AI-written and part of it is not.
It never records when the text was written, which AI model wrote it, or whether anyone edited it afterwards.
The label is attached the moment the text is generated, and it travels everywhere that text goes:
Your storefront pages
Your emails
Your structured data
If the text is translated, the label goes with it too.
What gets labelled
Text Judge.me's AI wrote for you:
Review summaries for your products and your store
Review highlights, the short quotes pulled from your reviews
AI FAQ questions and answers
Suggested replies to reviews
The copy inside your smart email templates
What does not get labelled
Reviews your customers wrote. Never labelled. They are not AI-generated.
Translations of your customers' reviews. A straight translation of a real review is excluded by the law.
Review keywords and sentiment labels. These are single words, which the law leaves out.
Anything you wrote yourself that AI was never involved in.
Replies and email copy from before September 2026. We didn't keep a record of who wrote them, and it can't be recovered.
Considerations
This is a legal requirement, not a setting. Judge.me adds the label on your behalf to meet the EU AI Act. There's nothing to turn on or off.
Editing the AI text does not remove the label. You can change one word, rewrite the whole thing, or delete it and type your own from scratch. The label stays if an AI draft was involved at any point.
This is separate from the visible "AI" badge you already know. That badge follows a different rule and works exactly as it does today. For example, the visible badge on a FAQ disappears when you edit the FAQ, but the hidden label stays. That's expected — the visible badge and the hidden label follow separate rules, so they don't have to match.
Your shoppers see nothing. No storefront page and no email looks any different to a customer.
A few pieces of content will never carry the label. This is deliberate, not a gap:
A small number of older FAQs, whose AI origin was already erased.
Three outbound formats we don't own: the Meta syndication feed, the review CSV formats used for migrating from other apps, and Shopify's review metaobjects.
None of these formats has a field for the label.
