The Abandoned checkout flow recovers lost sales by reminding customers who started checkout but didn't complete the order. It's one of the highest-return automations you can run.
How it works
Trigger: On checkout abandoned — a customer starts a checkout but does not complete the order. It sends once per checkout. If the same customer abandons another checkout before this sequence finishes, only the newest one continues — the older one's remaining emails are cancelled.
Three emails, with these default delays (all editable):
Email 1: sends about 1 hour after the checkout, reminding them of the items in their cart.
Email 2: sends about 23 hours after Email 1 — around 1 day after the checkout.
Email 3: sends about 2 days after Email 2 — around 3 days after the checkout, with a discount to help close the sale.
Every email shows the abandoned cart items and a link back to checkout. If the customer completes their purchase at any point, the remaining emails are cancelled.
These are recovery emails, not marketing
Abandoned checkout emails are treated as transactional recovery messages, so they reach customers who started a checkout even if they haven't opted in to marketing. This gives the flow much wider reach than the marketing flows.
One exception: if a customer has actively unsubscribed from your marketing emails, they won't get abandoned checkout emails either. This only exempts customers who've simply never opted in — an explicit unsubscribe is still respected.
Note: To avoid sending two reminders, we recommend turning off Shopify's built-in abandoned checkout email once this flow is live.
