Understanding Judge.me loading speed and performance

Learn how Judge.me optimizes loading speed with code splitting, async loading, and Shopify metafields to keep your store fast.

Judge.me is designed to have a minimal impact on your store's loading speed. This article explains how Judge.me loads on your store and what keeps it fast.

How it works

Judge.me uses several techniques to keep your store fast:

  • Code splitting — Instead of loading one large file, Judge.me splits its code into smaller chunks and only loads what each page needs. A product page won't load code for features it doesn't use, and a page with no Judge.me widgets loads only a lightweight entry script.

  • Async loading — All scripts load asynchronously, meaning they don't block your page from rendering. Your store's content appears first, and Judge.me loads in the background.

  • Shopify metafields — Review ratings, counts, and badges are stored directly in Shopify metafields. Widgets like the Star Rating Badge render immediately with your page — no extra requests needed.

  • Shopify CDN — Scripts and stylesheets are served from Shopify's own CDN, benefiting from the same fast delivery network your theme uses.

  • Lazy loading — On dedicated reviews pages, reviews load progressively instead of all at once, reducing the initial page weight.

All files are compressed, minified, and cached by the browser, so repeat visits are even faster. These optimizations are enabled automatically — no configuration needed on your end.

Considerations

  • Judge.me is consistently ranked as one of the lightest review apps on Shopify in independent speed comparisons.

  • Your store's overall PageSpeed score is affected by all installed apps and scripts — not just Judge.me. Removing unused apps is often the most effective way to improve performance.

  • Google's Core Web Vitals (the metrics that affect search rankings) measure real user experience over 28 days. Single PageSpeed test scores can vary between runs due to server conditions and Google's testing methodology.

  • Review images uploaded by customers are served from Judge.me's image CDN with automatic compression and resizing.

Troubleshooting

My PageSpeed score dropped after installing Judge.me

Issue:

Your Google PageSpeed Insights score decreased after installing Judge.me.

Why it happens:

Any app that adds functionality to your store will have some impact on PageSpeed scores. However, Judge.me is designed to minimize this impact.

How to fix:

  1. Check if you have other review apps still installed (e.g. Stamped, Loox, Yotpo). Having two review apps doubles the script load — remove any you're not using.

  2. Check your total number of installed apps. Each app adds scripts to your store.

  3. Run multiple PageSpeed tests — scores can vary by 10–20 points between runs, especially on mobile. Look at the trend over time, not a single result.

  4. Check your Core Web Vitals (shown at the top of PageSpeed results). If they show "Passed," your real users are having a good experience regardless of the lab score.
