Setting up referral emails

Learn how to set up referral emails in Judge.me, including initial referral emails, reminder emails, timing, content, incentives, and product recommendations.

Referral emails help customers find and share their personal referral link after they place an order. You can use them alongside the referral widget on the Thank you and Order Status page, or use referral emails on their own.

Judge.me supports two automated referral emails: an initial referral email sent after purchase, and a referral reminder email sent after a delay you choose. These emails help customers share your store with friends, claim referral rewards, and drive more trusted sales.


How it works

Referral emails are part of the Judge.me referrals program. There are two referral emails:

  • Initial referral email: Sent to the customer about 5 minutes after order creation. This email includes the customer’s personal referral link and explains the referral offer.

  • Referral reminder email: Sent before the referral reward expires, based on the reminder timing you set. This email reminds the customer to share their referral link before the offer expires.

You can choose how customers receive their referral link:

  • Widget only: Show the referral link on the Thank you and Order Status page.

  • Email only: Send the referral link by email.

  • Widget and email: Show the referral link on the Thank you and Order Status page and send it by email.

For new merchants with referrals enabled, referral emails are on by default. Existing merchants need to opt in.


Considerations

  • Referral emails work only when the Referral reward feature is enabled.

  • New merchants with referrals enabled have referral emails on by default.

  • Existing merchants need to turn on referral emails manually.

  • The initial referral email is sent after order creation, not after fulfillment.

  • The referral reminder email is sent after the configured delay, regardless of whether the customer clicked or shared the referral link.

  • Referral email eligibility follows the same logic as the referral widget.

  • If referrals are turned off before a scheduled referral email is sent, the email will not be sent.

  • If the referral offer has already expired before the reminder email is sent, the reminder email will not be sent.

  • Referral emails use the existing unsubscribe behavior for coupon and referral emails. Separate unsubscribe lists are not available.


How to enable referral emails

To enable referral emails:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Referrals.

  2. Open Send referral reward to the customer.

  3. In Send email to customer with referral reward, check "Email customers their referral code after the purchase is complete".

  4. Click Save.

If the Referral reward feature is turned off, referral email settings are disabled. Turn on Referral reward first to edit the email settings.


Referral reminder email timing

The referral reminder email is sent after the initial referral email.

To change the reminder email timing:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Referrals.

  2. Scroll down to the Validity section.

  3. Check "Send a reminder email before the coupon expires"

  4. Enter a delay before the coupon expires.

  5. Click Save.


Referral email variants

Judge.me automatically adjusts referral email content based on whether you use a 1-way or 2-way incentive.

1. Initial referral email

The initial referral email is sent 5 minutes after order creation and introduces the referral offer.

  • For 1-way incentives, the email tells the customer their friend can get a discount.

  • For 2-way incentives, the email tells the customer their friend can get a discount and that the customer can receive a reward after the friend purchases.

2. Referral reminder email

The referral reminder email reminds the customer to share their referral link before the offer expires.

  • For 1-way incentives, the reminder focuses on the friend’s discount expiring soon.

  • For 2-way incentives, the reminder also highlights that the customer’s referral reward may expire.


Customizing referral email content

You can customize the content of your referral emails from the referral email editor.

To customize a referral email:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Email templates.

  2. In Discounts and rewards section, find Referrals or Referral reminder. Depending on which email template you'd like to adjust.

  3. Click Edit.

  4. Apply your changes.

  5. Click Save.

You can customize:

  • Email subject

  • Preheader text

  • Email title

  • Email content

  • Confirmation button text

1. Setting the tone of voice

You can choose a tone of voice for referral emails. Judge.me uses your selected tone to generate email copy that matches your brand style.

Available tone options are:

  • Elegant

  • Direct

  • Friendly

  • Custom (default)

To change the tone of voice:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Email templates.

  2. In Discounts and rewards section, find Referrals or Referral reminder. Depending on which email template you'd like to adjust.

  3. In Language section, click the Tone of voice dropdown.

  4. Choose the tone you want to use.

  5. Review the updated email copy.

  6. Click Save.

2. Adding product recommendations

You can also include product recommendations section in referral emails. When product recommendations are enabled, referral emails can show products with Buy now buttons. These buttons link to the product page and automatically apply the referral coupon code, so the friend can shop without the need to manually apply the discount.

To add product recommendations:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Email templates.

  2. In Discounts and rewards section, find Referrals or Referral reminder. Depending on which email template you'd like to adjust.

  3. Scroll down to Email add-ons.

  4. Check "Show product recommendations".

  5. Click Save.

3. Using multiple languages

Referral emails support multiple languages, following the same pattern as other Judge.me emails.

To edit referral email content for another language:

  1. From your Judge.me admin, go to Settings > Email templates.

  2. In Discounts and rewards section, find Referrals or Referral reminder. Depending on which email template you'd like to adjust.

  3. In the Language section, use the language selector to choose a language.

  4. Edit the email content for that language.

  5. Click Save.

Repeat these steps for each language you want to edit.
