Judge.me Email: Targeting your sign-up popup

Choose which pages, countries, and devices show your sign-up popup, and hide it from subscribers.

Available on the Free plan

These options are rolling out gradually, so you may not see them in your admin yet.

Show your sign-up popup only where it helps. Limit it to certain pages or countries, keep it off phones, and stop showing it to people who are already subscribed.

How popup targeting works

The Targeting and Audience cards sit at the top of the Rules tab, above Triggers.

Use popup targeting to:

  • Show the popup only on some pages. For example, show it on product pages but not on your cart page.

  • Show it only in some countries, or everywhere except some. The country is where the customer is browsing from.

  • Keep it off phones. Customers on phones and small tablets won't see it.

  • Stop showing it to subscribers. Logged-in subscribers, and anyone who already signed up through the popup, won't see it again.

  • Catch customers who are leaving on phones and tablets. Exit intent now works on touch screens.

  • Use a timer and exit intent together. The popup shows after the delay, or sooner if the customer is about to leave.

Considerations

  • Hide from subscribers is on by default. This is true for new popups and for popups you made before this option existed. Expect fewer popup views and a higher sign-up rate, because people who already subscribed stop seeing it. Uncheck it to show the popup to everyone again.

  • Your rules apply to you too. On your own store, you may not see the popup. Use Test view to check it. Test view ignores every rule.

  • Visitor country is where the customer is browsing from. We find it from their internet connection. It isn't their shipping address or store language. A customer using a VPN is placed in the VPN's country.

    • If we can't place a customer, they count as outside every list. Only these countries hides the popup from them. All countries except these shows it.

  • Hide from subscribers only knows subscribers it can recognize. These are customers logged in to your store, and anyone who signed up through the popup in the same browser. A subscriber on a new device, in a private window, or after clearing cookies still sees the popup.

    • A sign-up is remembered with a cookie for 400 days, or 7 days from their last visit on Safari. If cookies are blocked, a sign-up isn't remembered.

  • Hide on mobile goes by screen width. A screen 768 px wide or less counts as mobile. Some tablets held upright count as mobile. A tablet held sideways usually doesn't.

  • You still have one popup. Targeting decides where and to whom it shows. It can't show a different popup or offer per page or per country.

  • You pick pages by type, not one by one. There are no rules for cart value, traffic source, or new versus returning customers.

  • Hide from subscribers overrides Display frequency. Someone who signed up never sees the popup again in that browser, whatever Hide after interaction is set to. Closing the popup or clicking its decline link still follows Display frequency.

  • Hide on mobile limits exit intent. With both on, phones never see the popup. Touch-screen exit intent then only works on tablets wider than 768 px.

Set up targeting

1. Choose pages

To show your popup only on some pages:

  1. From your Judge.me Email app, go to Popups.

  2. Click Customize, and select the Rules tab.

  3. For Pages, select Only these pages.

  4. In Page types, check the pages to show the popup on:

    • Home page

    • Product pages

    • Collection pages (includes the page that lists all collections)

    • Cart page

    • Other pages (blog posts, search results, and any page not listed)

  5. Click Save.

Home page, Product pages, and Collection pages start checked.

2. Choose countries

To show your popup only in some countries, or everywhere except some:

  1. From your Judge.me Email app, go to Popups.

  2. Click Customize, and select the Rules tab.

  3. For Visitor country, select Only these countries or All countries except these.

  4. Click the Regions and countries field.

  5. Select a region, or search for a country and select it.

  6. Click Save.

A region adds all its countries. After picking a region, you can remove single countries. The regions are Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania, and European Union. Europe doesn't include every European Union country. Cyprus, for example, is in Asia.

3. Hide the popup on phones

To keep your popup off phones:

  1. From your Judge.me Email app, go to Popups.

  2. Click Customize, and select the Rules tab.

  3. In the Targeting section, check Hide on mobile.

  4. Click Save.

4. Hide the popup from subscribers

To stop showing your popup to people who are already subscribed:

  1. From your Judge.me Email app, go to Popups.

  2. Click Customize, and select the Rules tab.

  3. In the Audience section, check Hide from subscribers. It's checked by default.

  4. Click Save.

To show the popup to subscribers too, uncheck it.

5. Choose a trigger

To choose when your popup shows:

  1. From your Judge.me Email app, go to Popups.

  2. Click Customize, and select the Rules tab.

  3. For Trigger, select one of the following options:

    • Time on page

    • Exit intent

    • Both

  4. If you selected Time on page or Both, enter a number of seconds from 1–120 in the Delay field.

  5. Click Save.

With Both, the popup shows once: after the delay, or sooner if the customer is about to leave.

On desktop, exit intent fires when the cursor moves toward the address bar. On phones and tablets, it fires when the customer scrolls up quickly after reading down the page.

Troubleshoot

I can't see my popup on my store

Issue:

The popup doesn't show when you visit your own store.

Why it happens:

Your own rules may hide it from you. You may be browsing from a country you excluded, on a phone with Hide on mobile on, on a page type you didn't pick, or you may already have signed up.

How to fix:

Click More actions, then Test view. Test view shows the popup with every rule ignored.

I only show the popup in my country, but I can't see it there

Issue:

Only these countries is set to your country, but the popup doesn't show.

Why it happens:

You may be on a VPN or a work network that connects through another country. If we can't place a customer, they count as outside your list.

How to fix:

Turn off the VPN, or check from a different network.

Subscribers still see the popup

Issue:

People who are already subscribed still see your popup.

Why it happens:

Hide from subscribers only recognizes customers logged in to your store, and people who signed up through the popup in the same browser. Someone who subscribed another way, or on another device, still sees it until they log in.

How to fix:

No action needed. This is how the option works.

"Select at least one page type" or "Select at least one region or country"

Issue:

You can't save your rules and one of these messages shows.

Why it happens:

You selected Only these pages, Only these countries, or All countries except these without picking anything.

How to fix:

Pick at least one page type, region, or country. Or select All pages or All countries, then click Save.

Exit intent doesn't fire on my phone

Issue:

The popup doesn't show when you try to leave on a phone.

Why it happens:

On phones, exit intent needs a quick scroll up after you've read down the page. A slow scroll up doesn't count. If Hide on mobile is on, phones never see the popup.

How to fix:

Scroll down the page first, then scroll up quickly. Make sure Hide on mobile is off.
