Judge.me Email: Importing your subscriber list

Bring your list from Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, or a spreadsheet, including the people who unsubscribed.

Available on the Free plan.

We’re rolling this out gradually, so you may not see it in your store yet.

Moving to Judge.me Email from another email provider? Import your list so nobody is lost in the move, including the people who unsubscribed. We check your file against your store and show you what will change before anything is saved.

How it works

Use the subscriber list import to:

  • Bring your list with you — people in your file become Shopify customers with their subscription status, so your campaigns can reach them.

  • Keep your opt-outs — people who unsubscribed at your old provider are unsubscribed here too, so you don't email someone who asked you to stop.

  • Check before you commit — every number on the review step opens the list of people behind it, so you can spot a wrong column or an old file before anything is saved.

The import has 3 steps in the app: upload your list, review what will change, and import.

Sources you can import from

You can import from the following sources:

  • Klaviyo

  • Mailchimp

  • Omnisend

  • Another email provider — any provider that can export each person's status and the date it last changed.

  • A spreadsheet or other list — any CSV with an email address, a subscribed or unsubscribed column, and a date.

We only accept CSV files.

How we decide each person's status

  • If someone is new to your store, we add them with the status in your file.

  • If someone is already in your store, the most recent date wins. We compare the date in your file with the last time their status changed in your store. We keep whichever is newer.

    • To unsubscribe someone, the date in your file must be the same as or newer than ours.

    • To subscribe someone again, the date in your file must be newer than ours.

  • Only subscribed and unsubscribed statuses change anyone. Any other status, such as "never subscribed" or "pending", is skipped. The person stays as they are.

  • A blank status takes the setting of its file. In a file marked Contacts, a blank status counts as subscribed.

  • A row with a blank date can add someone new or unsubscribe someone. It can't subscribe someone who is already in your store.

  • People who bounced, complained, or were suppressed at your old provider are never added as subscribers. If they're already in your store, we stop sending them marketing emails. To import them, put them in a separate file and set What this file holds to Bounced or blocked.

  • If the same address appears more than once in a file, we use the last row.

  • If the same address appears in more than 1 file, we use the row with the newest date. If an unsubscribe and a subscribe have the same date, the unsubscribe wins.

What the numbers mean

The review step shows 5 numbers. After the import, the same numbers show what happened.

  • We'll add / Added — New people we create in your store. This includes people your file says are unsubscribed, because we add them to record the opt-out.

  • We'll stop emailing / Stopped emailing — People who are subscribed in your store and unsubscribed in your file.

  • We'll start emailing / Started emailing — People who aren't subscribed in your store and are subscribed more recently in your file.

  • Already up to date — People who are already in your store and whose status doesn't change.

  • We'll skip / Skipped — Rows we don't use. People already in your store keep their status. This number can go up during the import if Shopify refuses a row.

Why a row was skipped

The people list shows a reason for each skipped row:

  • No email address or Not a valid email address — Fix the row in your file and import again.

  • Duplicate in your file — The same address appears more than once. We use 1 row and skip the rest.

  • No consent information — The person is new to your store, and the status isn't subscribed or unsubscribed, or we couldn't read the date.

  • Not changed: still subscribed, Not changed: still unsubscribed, or Not changed: still not subscribed — The person is already in your store, and the row has no status or date we can use. They keep the status shown.

  • Not changed: newer opt-in in Shopify — Your file says this person unsubscribed, but they opted in again more recently in Shopify. They stay subscribed.

  • Blocked: bounced at your old provider or Blocked: suppressed at your old provider — The person is already in your store. We won't send them marketing emails.

  • Not added: bounced at your old provider or Not added: suppressed at your old provider — The person isn't in your store, so we didn't add them.

  • Bounced or blocked at your old provider — Your old provider stopped emailing this address.

  • Removed from Shopify — This customer was deleted in Shopify.

  • Already blocked at Judge.me — This address already bounced or complained at Judge.me.

  • Couldn't save to Shopify — Shopify didn't accept the change. It's safe to import the file again.

Considerations

The subscriber list import has these limits and behaviors:

  • An import can't be undone. People you unsubscribe stay unsubscribed. Check the review step carefully before you start.

  • You can't cancel an import once it starts. It's safe to import the same file again later.

  • An import can hold up to 300,000 rows in total, across up to 10 files. Each file can be up to 120 MB. Split a bigger list and import each part in turn.

  • Every file needs a column with email addresses and a column with the date the status last changed. The date cells can be blank.

  • A file from Another email provider or A spreadsheet or other list also needs a status column, unless you mark it Unsubscribed.

  • Set What this file holds correctly on every file. A file marked Contacts counts everyone in it as subscribed, unless its status column says otherwise.

  • Dates must look like 2026-10-06, 10/06/2026, or 10/06/26 (month first). We can't read a date before 1900. A time after the date is fine. We can't read day-first dates such as 25/12/2026, and we read 03/04/2026 as March 4.

  • For Another email provider and spreadsheets, "subscribed", "yes", "true", and "1" mean subscribed. "Unsubscribed", "no", "false", and "0" mean unsubscribed.

  • Bounces and spam complaints aren't imported. Those people are skipped. If your old provider still exported them as subscribed, Judge.me Email blocks the address after an email to it hard bounces. A hard bounce means the address can't receive email.

  • People we add don't get a Welcome email.

  • A big list takes a few hours to import. Shopify processes large imports in batches, so 100,000 people take about 1 hour. You don't need to wait on the page.

  • Your first campaign to an imported list goes out over several days. We limit how many new people you can email each day to protect your sending reputation. Nobody is missed.

  • Only 1 import can run at a time.

Set up the subscriber list import

Step 1: Export your list

Export everyone from your old provider, including the people who unsubscribed. Find your provider below.

From Klaviyo

To export your list from Klaviyo:

  1. From your Klaviyo account, go to Lists & segments.

  2. Click Create List / Segment.

  3. Select Segment.

  4. Add the condition If someone can or cannot receive marketing > can receive > email marketing.

  5. Add a second condition If someone can or cannot receive marketing > cannot receive > email marketing.

  6. Make sure the 2 conditions are joined by OR. Together they include everyone.

  7. Click Create Segment.

  8. From the Manage Segment dropdown, select Export Segment to CSV.

  9. Make sure the export includes the Email Marketing Consent and Email Marketing Consent Timestamp columns.

From Mailchimp

To export your list from Mailchimp:

  1. From your Mailchimp account, click your profile icon.

  2. Click Account.

  3. From the Settings dropdown, select Manage my data.

  4. Select Audiences.

  5. Click Export Data.

  6. When Mailchimp emails you, go back to Manage my data and download the ZIP file.

  7. Unzip the file.

Run a full account export, not a single-audience export. Mailchimp gives you separate files for subscribed and unsubscribed contacts. You add all of them to the import. Mailchimp allows 1 account export a day, and a large account can take up to 24 hours.

From Omnisend

To export your list from Omnisend:

  1. From your Omnisend account, go to Audience > Exports.

  2. Click New Export.

  3. Select Contacts by email subscription status.

  4. Select Subscribed.

  5. Click Export.

  6. Repeat steps 2–5 for your unsubscribed contacts.

  7. From Audience > Exports, download both files.

Include the Email subscription status, Email opt-in date, and Email opt-out date columns in both exports. You add both files to the import.

From Another email provider

To export your list from another email provider:

  1. Export your whole list with each person's subscription status and the date that status last changed.

  2. Include the people who unsubscribed.

From a spreadsheet or other list

To prepare your list as a spreadsheet:

  1. Add 1 row per person.

  2. Add a column with each person's email address.

  3. Add a column that says whether each person is subscribed, for example "yes" or "no".

  4. Add a column with the date each person's status last changed, or the date they agreed to hear from you.

  5. Save the file as a CSV with a header row.

Step 2: Upload your list

To upload your list to the subscriber list import:

  1. From your Judge.me Email app, go to Subscribers.

  2. Click Import a list.

  3. From the Where is this list from dropdown, select your source.

  4. Drop your CSV files into Your files.

  5. For each file, from the What this file holds dropdown, select one of the following options:

    • Contacts — everyone in the file counts as subscribed, unless the status column says otherwise.

    • Unsubscribed — everyone in the file counts as unsubscribed, unless the status column says otherwise.

    • Bounced or blocked — everyone in the file is someone your old provider stopped emailing. We never add them as subscribers. If they're already in your store, we stop sending them marketing emails.

    • Do not use this file — we ignore the file.

  6. In the Column mapping section, check that each field points at the right column. We fill these in where we can:

    • Email address (required)

    • Subscription status (required for files from Another email provider or A spreadsheet or other list, unless the file is marked Unsubscribed)

    • Date the status last changed (required)

    • First name (optional)

    • Last name (optional)

  7. Click Next.

Step 3: Review and confirm

To review your list and start the import:

  1. Read the 5 numbers.

  2. Click a number to see the people behind it.

  3. Check I confirm these people gave us permission to email them, this list was not bought, rented or scraped, and the consent dates in this file are genuine.

  4. Check I understand this import can't be undone.

  5. Click Start import.

Step 4: Check your results

To check the results of your subscriber list import:

  1. Wait for the import to finish. You can leave the page. We email you the results when it's done.

  2. Click a number to see who was changed.

  3. Click Download results to save a CSV with every row and what happened to it.

Troubleshooting

The review step says "This import wouldn't change anything".

In the subscriber list import, this means everyone in your file is already in your store with the same status. The dates in your file may be older than the last change in your store, or the statuses may not be subscribed or unsubscribed. Check the status and date columns in your file.

“Map the column that…” appears when I click Next.

A required column isn’t matched. In the subscriber list import, select the right column from the Column in your file dropdown. The hint under each field tells you which column to look for in your provider’s export.

My file holds more than 300,000 rows, or is too large to upload.

The subscriber list import takes up to 300,000 rows in total and up to 120 MB per file. Split your list and import each part in turn. It's safe to import the same people twice.

My import stopped part-way.

We stop the subscriber list import when too many rows fail. The people we already imported are in your subscriber list, and nothing else changed. Download the results to see where we stopped. It's safe to import the same file again, and we skip anyone we already added.

Where are my results?

We email the results of your subscriber list import to your store's contact email when it finishes. The results are attached as a CSV. If the file is too big to attach, the email links to the results instead.

Can I undo an import?

No. To find the people the subscriber list import added, go to Subscribers and filter by Source > Imported. People the import only updated keep their original source.
